Chapter Zero

Board members from on-the-go food retailer Greggs and online grocer Ocado share their journeys and the experiences of their businesses moving ahead on climate, with Chapter Zero co-founder Susan Hooper.

In a sector with changing consumer behaviour and large complex, global supply chains, how are these companies keeping up with, and getting ahead of, the climate curve?

Food production and consumption are responsible for around 30% of global carbon emissions, and are notoriously hard to reduce. Food retailers have a huge role to play through their supply chains and their own operations. In this event, board members from two well-known companies in the food sector will share their achievements and challenges on the road to net zero.

Greggs is well known for baking and selling food to millions of on-the-go customers in the UK every week and has been a pioneer in the UK vegan fast-food bakery sector. Greggs has declared the ‘Greggs Pledge’ on sustainability, has adopted science-based targets, is tackling emissions through its bakeries and stores and factoring in net zero to all its capital projects.

Ocado, arguably the world’s largest dedicated online grocery, aims to be the UK’s ‘greenest grocer’. Ocado is working with the British Retail Consortium to ensure that its net zero targets underpin its core business decisions.

Both companies have committed to becoming net zero in their operations by 2035 and in their value chain by 2040.

Susan Hooper, experienced non-executive director and Chapter Zero board member will lead a conversation with Jonathan Jowett, Company Secretary and General Counsel at Greggs and Niall McBride, Chief Financial Officer at Ocado to delve into how their businesses’ path to net zero can help inform you on your own companies’ journeys.
