With entrepreneurs such as Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos bringing the vast void of space to our doorstep, can we, as a human race, harness its resources for the betterment of the planet? Or are we simply distracting ourselves from the pressing issue right in front of us?
Harold Hutchinson, Head of UK Research at Investec, discusses how although space research and exploration is inspirational, in reality there are limits to the extent that humanity can escape planetary boundaries. He argues that as the Dasgupta Review suggests that we need 1.6 Earths to maintain our current requirement for resources, and as we know there is no "planet b" nearby, we should be working to pass on a sustainable planet for our descendants.
