The Guild of HR Professionals recently celebrated the second cohort of delegates completing their NED Programme in what was an intense - but rewarding - development experience for the Guild’s senior HR members who are considering Non-Executive Director or Trustee Roles.
The training session delivered by Louis Cooper, CEO of the Non-Executive Directors’ Association, and co-facilitated by Andrea Eccles, Past Master Guild of HR Professionals, was a one-day session focused on how to become an effective NED. Key elements included the role of NEDs, latest Corporate Governance developments, the construct and activities of an ‘Effective Board’, an overview of the various Board Committees and an evaluation of Board Performance. A deeper dive was also undertaken on board strategy and risk management, with a comprehensive reading list provided to delegates alongside ‘Top Tips’ on the board legal requirements for NEDs.
This full day programme was the culmination of a series of interventions to help HR make the transition and a board contribution to the Board table. Part One started in June with expert insights and shared experiences on how to prepare to be a NED, including how HR professionals can position themselves as credible candidates. This was followed by an individual mentoring session, organised and led by Chris Woodman, using HR Company existing NEDs to help shape the personal journey for each individual.
Delegate feedback showed that this tri-approach of Preparation, Mentoring and Structured Learning was a very comprehensive programme of activities helping to set a course towards the boardroom for HR aspirational NEDs.
The dates and details of the 2024 programme will be announced in the New Year and you can register your interest now via info@hrleadershipprograme.org.uk
