The NED Debate 2024: A Look Back at the Highlights

The NED Debate 2024 saw compelling arguments from both sides on whether boards struggle to identify and manage risk, ultimately concluding with a strong majority in favour of the motion. This insight provides a look back at the event through photos, capturing key moments and highlighting an evening of lively discussion.

The annual NED Debate brought together industry experts and executives for a stimulating evening of discussion and networking, with this year’s event centered around the topical motion: “This House believes boards struggle to identify and manage risk.”

The motion was ultimately upheld, with an overwhelming 81% of the Floor supporting the proposition, led by Sir Chris Deverell and Dr. Ruth Wandhofer.

However, the opposition put forth several incredibly compelling counterpoints, with the strong argumentative skills of Angela Knight and Danny Lopez successfully shifting a significant portion of the Floor’s opinion over the course of the evening.

In fact, the initial stance on the motion showed 92% of the Floor to be in favour of the proposing, with 6% against and 2% abstaining; by the final vote, a notable portion switched sides, with 18% against the motion and just 1% abstaining.

The evening saw an impressive level of enthusiastic engagement from the Floor, with participants contributing strong points and insights on the complexities of risk management. It was brilliant to see so many varied opinions put forth, not only unpacking the theory and semantics behind the motion, but also bringing it to life with lived experiences in a wide range of sectors.

Barry Gamble chaired the debate with his characteristic charm and wit, ensuring a lively and thoughtful debate throughout the evening, whilst engaging points from the Floor with great tact.

Following the formal debate, attendees continued to delve into the topic over food and drinks during the networking session. Conversations carried on the energy and passion of the debate, making it clear that the topic resonated deeply with the audience.

It was also great to see so many influential companies come together from various industries at the core of this topical issue.

The event was hosted in WTW’s fantastic auditorium, with Eve Richards, Head of FINEX D&O, giving the opening speech for the event.

Meanwhile, representatives from our sponsor companies were responsible for critical contributions to the debate, reflecting their passion in actively shaping discussions for NEDs and risk management.

We’d therefore like to thank Equiniti, Alumni Global, BDO, CMS, and Board Agenda for their invaluable support in making this year’s debate happen, as well as the team from WTW.

Thank you also to NEDA’s own Graham Durgan for rounding the evening off with his closing speech.
